Glucose Monitoring kit ?
Tldr; looking for recommendations for monitoring glucose at home for my dog.
RoRo is a 12yo 13.5lb blind/deaf YorkiePoo who was seen by her vet and diagnosed with diabetes after reports of unquenchable thirst, potty accidents and unintentional weight loss. Her CBC came back showing a glucose of 588 on 12/23. She also has left sided heart failure with pulmonary edema.
She was started on 3 units of Novolin -N, 12.5mg furosemide and Vetmedin every 12 hours. Derma-3 1x/day. Diet switched to Hill's WD of 75g every 12 hours, which has wheat flour as the first ingredient. Wheat flour has historically caused her allergy issues, but no acute issues so far.
Followup glucose check on 1/08 resulted in a glucose of 518 and a weight of 12.8lb. I am hoping the weight loss is water weight, as she's consuming far less water. Although the numbers dropped, her body feels far more robust than on 12/23.
Insulin dosage increased to 4 units with a fu with tech again in 2 weeks. Rosie is certainly feeling better than the last visit and her respiratory rate is back down to 30 breaths a minute. She's playing with her toys again on occasion, but tires out very quickly.
Does anyone have a glucose monitoring kit that they use for their own dogs? I see some canine-specific on Amazon, but all are with questionable ratings/reviews. I have also heard of others using human glucose monitors and see some studies that show that the difference is negligible, especially when used just for monitoring with veterinarian oversight that dictates the recommended dose of insulin.
I would like to see her glucose dropping at a more steady rate. I am also concerned that her turkey tendon chews or bedtime Dentastix (her only treat) may be spiking her glucose, but am reluctant to discontinue them because she looks forward to it so much at bedtime. In the last year she's lost her two canine siblings (12 yo w congenital heart defect, 17yo to hemangiosarcoma), and with her now being blind/deaf, it's very difficult to get her active.
